The Certificate in Psychotherapy is a three-year program, offered one day per week during the fall and winter terms, plus one summer intersession course each year. The program is of interest to students applying for the Registered Psychotherapist designation with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
There are 10 graduate-level theory courses included in the Certificate of Psychotherapy:
Year One
- Psychodynamic Psychotherapies (Fall)
- Foundations in Psychotherapy (Fall)
- Human Development and Psychotherapy (Winter)
- Pre-Practicum Theory Class (Winter)

Year Three

The fall term is 12 weeks long, beginning in September. The winter term is 12 weeks long, beginning the first full week of January. All classes are held on Mondays from 8:40 am – 4:00 pm. A six-week intensive spring course (100% attendance required) is offered each year and usually begins on the last Monday of April.
Daily schedule
| 8:40 – 9:00 | Gathering and reflection |
| 9:00 – 12:00 | Theory and in-class training |
| 1:00 – 4:00 | Theory (Year One) — Group Supervision and SEUS Group (Years Two & Three) |
Clinical supervision
Students in years 2 and 3 receive 10 hours of clinical supervision each year — 5 hours in each of the fall and winter terms. These sessions are typically individual or dyadic. Students also receive 36 hours of group supervision during each of the fall and winter terms. Missed supervision sessions are not made up unless arranged in advance with the supervisor.
Clinical hours
In addition to weekly classes, year 2 and year 3 students are expected to carry a caseload of approximately five clients per week. Students arrange their own clients and placements in consultation with training staff. TCPCE cannot guarantee placements, although we maintain established relationships with agencies that have offered placements to our students in the past.
Personal psychotherapy
Skilled psychotherapists attend to their own personal growth and healing. Students must be able to verify completion of at least 50 hours of personal psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist (or an equivalent member of a regulatory college permitted to perform psychotherapy). We recommend beginning personal psychotherapy in your first year of the program.
The 50 hours do not need to be continuous, but must be paced as follows:
- 15 hours by the end of year one (required to begin placement).
- 20 hours completed during year two.
- The remaining 15 hours completed during year three.
The 50 hours must be verified by a letter from your psychotherapist. This verification is one of the requirements to receive a certificate of program completion.
Course requirements
Each of the 10 courses includes several written assignments and/or examinations. Written assignments total approximately 25–30 pages and are completed outside of class hours. Assigned reading takes 3–4 hours per week on average in addition to class hours.
Progression through the program
To progress through the three-year certificate program, students must complete all required coursework from the previous year. A student who has not completed required courses or assignments for their year may not be permitted to enter the next year until the work is complete. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances may be approved by the Program Director.
The entire Certificate program must be completed within 6 years for the certificate to be awarded.
Completion of the program does not guarantee employment. This handbook serves as the contract (once an offer is accepted) between the student and the college, and is subject to the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005 and the regulations made under the Act.
