Education History

Beginning in 1967 as the Toronto Institute of Human Relations, this antecedent of the Toronto Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling Education Program provided an opportunity for persons to engage in education in the theory and practice of psychotherapy that included both theoretical and experiential training. In 1991 this human relations training program evolved into the pastoral counselling education program of the Toronto Institute of Pastoral Education
within the Toronto School of Theology, with its mandate to provide academic and supervised education in psychotherapy primarily to spiritual leaders in ecumenical and interfaith communities. This psychotherapy training program included the acquisition of theoretical knowledge in psychotherapy, development of clinical skills, deepening of self-awareness, and integration of psychological insights and spiritual understanding. With the advent of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, the Toronto Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling Education has continued to provide opportunities for psychotherapy training for persons preparing for certification as registered psychotherapists in Ontario.
